JOb Purpose

The Field Lab Technician will be responsible for performing project-related laboratory procedures and supporting field activities with accuracy, attention to detail, and adherence to quality and biosafety standards. The role includes participant screening, sample collection, and data documentation in line with study requirements. Additionally, the technician will play an active role in facilitating linkage to care, ensuring that screened or identified participants are guided and connected to the appropriate diagnostic, treatment, or follow-up services as per project protocols.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complete training on all assigned activities, procedures, and SOPs.
  • Perform screening of participants according to the protocol and eligibility criteria.
  • Perform sample collection (tongue and sputum swabs or other required specimens) as per the SOP/project protocol.
  • Conduct rapid diagnostic tests as per SOPs.
  • Ensure accurate labelling, processing, storage, and transport of specimens.
  • Maintain proper functioning, calibration, and cleanliness of diagnostic equipment.
  • Implement strict infection control and biosafety measures at all times.
  • Record participant data and results accurately in forms, registers, or digital tools?
  • Ensure timely and complete documentation of all tests, observations, and activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and secure handling of participant information.
  • Guide participants with presumptive TB or other conditions through the diagnostic pathway.
  • Coordinate with project teams and facility staff to ensure timely follow-up, referral, and treatment initiation.
  • Support documentation of linkage outcomes and communicate any delays or barriers.
  • Assist in tracking participants who require additional testing or who miss appointments.
  • Report any incidents, near-misses, or equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Provide daily/weekly activity updates to supervisors as required.
  • Support logistics, supply management, and stock monitoring for consumables and lab materials.
  • Support planning, implementation, and monitoring of project-related activities as required.
  • Perform field-related duties and support other team members of the team when required.
  • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the line manager to support overall study and program objectives.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSA)

Required Qualification

  • Minimum Intermediate with lab related diploma/bachelor's in microbiology or relevant field

Required Experience

  • At least one year of relevant experience
