Surgical Systems Strengthening Program

Safe surgical care depends on strong health systems. In Pakistan, many district hospitals face gaps in infrastructure, workforce capacity, equipment, safety standards, and information systems that limit delivery of essential surgical services.

IRD’s Surgical Systems Strengthening Program works with governments to strengthen surgical care at national and district levels. Anchored in Pakistan’s National Vision for Surgical Care (NVSC 2020–25) and aligned with the Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS), the program connects national surgical planning with district-level implementation.

Through policy support and structured system assessments, IRD works with government and non-government partners to improve infrastructure, workforce capacity, equipment availability, safety practices, and surgical information systems. These efforts help first-level hospitals deliver essential procedures safely and reliably.

By supporting government-led reforms and developing replicable district models, the program helps expand equitable access to essential surgical care.
