Safe Circumcision Program

Circumcision is a near-universal practice in Pakistan; approximately 3.6 million male births occur each year and nearly all families seek circumcision. However, limited specialist availability and reliance on untrained providers have historically resulted in unsafe practices and unequal access to quality care.

IRD’s Safe Circumcision Program expands access to safe, standardized infant circumcision through both service delivery and national workforce development. Using supervised task-sharing models and a standardized technique, trained providers deliver safe procedures while maintaining strong quality assurance. In parallel, national training initiatives build the capacity of doctors and other providers to offer safe circumcision services across diverse health care settings.

By standardizing training, strengthening quality assurance, and working in partnership with government and professional bodies, IRD supports a scalable approach that improves safety, reduces reliance on untrained providers, and expands equitable access to circumcision services across Pakistan.

Surgical Systems Strengthening Program

Safe surgical care depends on strong health systems. In Pakistan, many district hospitals face gaps in infrastructure, workforce capacity, equipment, safety standards, and information systems that limit delivery of essential surgical services.

IRD’s Surgical Systems Strengthening Program works with governments to strengthen surgical care at national and district levels. Anchored in Pakistan’s National Vision for Surgical Care (NVSC 2020–25) and aligned with the Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS), the program connects national surgical planning with district-level implementation.

Through policy support and structured system assessments, IRD works with government and non-government partners to improve infrastructure, workforce capacity, equipment availability, safety practices, and surgical information systems. These efforts help first-level hospitals deliver essential procedures safely and reliably.

By supporting government-led reforms and developing replicable district models, the program helps expand equitable access to essential surgical care.

Online training program for research with human participants

Anyone conducting or helping with research involving human participants at IRD or its collaborative institutes —must have appropriate training to assure that the rights, welfare, and safety of human participants involved are protected. The training must be renewed at a minimum of every 3 years.

All core personnel named on a protocol subject to IRB review must complete the required training before the protocol can be approved. The training program utilized is conducted through online modules developed by CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) for Interactive Research & Development – IRD. If you have an existing account with CITI that is not affiliated with IRD, you will be given the option to make your training information available to IRD after logging in.

Begin CITI registration here, if you do not have a CITI account. If you are from IRD, use Interactive Research & Development- IRD as your institution. Your records will come directly to the IRB.

For core personnel unable to access the internet or not proficient in the English language, please contact the IRB office for assistance Note: The CITI program may take three or more hours to complete. Please schedule your time for training accordingly.
