Early childhood is a critical window for cognitive, emotional, and physical development. In South Africa, only 42% of children enrolled in early learning programmes are developmentally “on track,” and access to quality services remains limited in rural and peri-urban communities. Caregivers in vulnerable households often face compounded challenges of poverty, poor mental health, and limited support systems — directly affecting children’s developmental outcomes.

IRD’s Early Childhood Education Program strengthens early learning ecosystems through integrated, community-rooted models that combine play-based education, nutrition supplementation, and mental health support. Using a scalable hub-and-spoke approach, the program enhances the quality of early learning services, builds the capacity of practitioners, and supports caregiver wellbeing.

By embedding structured curricula, fortified nutrition, developmental tracking, and psychosocial care within community spaces, IRD helps create resilient, nurturing environments where young children can thrive.
